Becoming a volunteer coach is a wonderful opportunity to meet great people, experience exciting challenges, improve your own skills, contribute to our community, and have fun!

 

By working together, we all help to create a fun learning environment that allows our athletes to excel. SUMMIT ADAPTIVE SPORTS will do its best to equip its volunteer coaches with the skills and knowledge necessary for our athletes to have a very rewarding experience. In return, we ask volunteers to take their commitment to SUMMIT ADAPTIVE SPORTS, and the athletes, very seriously.

Requirements
 
  • Be prepared to love this job!

  • We have volunteer opportunities for all levels of experience.  Your level of experience will determine if you are a lead or assistant coach. We provide ongoing training to increase your skills and to cross train among sports.

  • Be at least 16 years old to Coach (we have some volunteer opportunities for those under age 16).

  • Must attend training sessions that will provide information on disabilities, training techniques & tools for our participants, and safety protocols

  • Complete all required forms as detailed below

  • CPR/First aid is beneficial

  1. Background Check (online)
  2. Safesport (online)
  3. Waivers for Summit Adaptive Sports and any venues we partner with will be provided to you (electronically if available) and must be electronically signed or returned to our office or supervisors. 
  4. You will receive a training schedule for in-person or online training.

Kayaking

  • Our kayaking program will be held on flat water. 

  • Adaptive equipment will be used to help fit and load our participants to the kayaks and into the water as necessary.

  • Volunteers will assist with adjustment of the adaptive equipment and help kayakers launch into the water.

Two Types of Volunteers:

On Land Volunteers​

  • Assist in fitting and loading the participants to kayaks and into/ out of the water.

  • Watch kayaks in water at all times.

  • If there is an emergency, that volunteer will contact emergency personnel and ensure that launching area is clear. 

In Water/On Kayak Volunteers

  • Stay within close range of kayaker at all times.

  • Maintain visual contact with the 'On Land' volunteer. 

  • Coach the participants to the greatest amount of independence possible, while ensuring proper breaks and hydration.

  • In the event of an emergency, "Blow Whistle" to alert the on land volunteer and other safety volunteers. 

Kayaking/SUP events will be held at Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, Collinsville, CT

 

  • Training July 18th, 5-7pm 

  • Event #1 July 25th, 4pm-6pm (cancelled because of river conditions)

  • Event #2, August 3rd, 4pm-6pm

  • Event #3, August 8th, 4pm - 6pm

  • Event #4 August 15th, 4pm-6pm 

  • Rain date August 22nd, 4pm-6pm

Hiking 

  • Hiking will be on easy to intermediate terrain.

  • Adaptive equipment will be available to assist those that need it including adaptive hiking chairs, poles, and more. 

  • Volunteers will help fit equipment to participant as needed.

  • Coaching will be to foster as much independence as possible while teaching about the environment and safety while hiking.

Hiking Program Details:

  • ​Our dates for hiking are: 
    • ​August 19th, 10:00am   McLean Game Refuge Granby, CT   Parking lot is just north of 150 Barndoor Hills Rd.    Please note that there are no restroom facilities.  
    • September 10th, arrive 10:30am,  event begins 11:00am  Farmington Flats: 80 Tunxis Mead Road Farmington, CT (Park in the first big parking lot on right, 50 yards north of the Tunxis Mead Skatepark.) 
    • September 17th, arrive 10:30am,  event begins 11:00 am   Sessions Woods:  341 Milford Street (rt69) Burlington, CT (Park in front of the building near the information kiosk or the flagpole.) 
    • September 24th, arrive 10:30am,  event begins 11:00 am  Heublein Tower (meeting spot TBA) Bring your lunch for a picnic at the top. - Cancelled  
    • October 1st,  arrive 10:15am, event begins 11:00 am Heublein Tower or MDC Reservoir #6 (meeting spot TBA) ​

Disc Golf

  • Experience is great but if you haven't played Disc Golf yet we will train you!

  • Adaptive equipment will  be available to assist those that need it including adaptive hiking chairs, poles, etc..

  • Volunteers will assist in fitting athletes to adaptive equipment if needed.

  • Practice sessions (throwing techniques, aiming for target, etc..)  will be held at Ski Sundown.

Disc Golf will celebrate National Disc Golf Day on August 5th with a Discovery Day.  Location is Brodie Park South in New Hartford (intersection of Niles & Harris Road).  Please arrive at 9:00 am, Event will be held from 10:00 - Noon.  

Biking - Mountain and Cross Country - will be held Sunday Aug 27th because of trail conditions  (same time and location) 

  • Be at least an intermediate biker - mountain bike or cross country

  • Helmets are required

  • Discovery Day to be held on August 26th (Rain date 8/27)  please arrive at 9:00,  Event will be held from 10:00 am - Noon at Norbrook Farm Trail 204 Stillman Hill Road Colebrook, CT 06021

Mountain Bike Discovery Day will be held Saturday August 26th (rain date August 27th) - Norbrook Farm Trail at Norbrook Brewery in Colebrook.  Please arrive at 9:00 am.  Bike-On and Suburban Sports will be on hand with a variety of adaptive bikes, e-assist and two wheel options.

A few notes

​

Helmets are required for all our coaches and participants for all biking activities. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to coach participants but we have other opportunities for those interested in getting involved before they turn 16.
